How much does SEO cost in South Africa?

Published agency guides put monthly SEO between roughly R3,000 and R15,000 or more. The number matters less than what it buys. Here is how to read a quote.

SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the ongoing work of making your site visible when people search for what you offer. Because it is a service and not a product, prices vary widely. Here is what the South African market looks like, and what to look for beyond the price.

Typical SEO prices in South Africa

Based on pricing guides published by South African agencies, such as this one and this one, the ranges look like this:

  • Entry-level monthly SEO: roughly R3,000 to R8,000, usually for small local businesses with modest competition.
  • Mid-range monthly SEO: roughly R8,000 to R15,000, for more competitive markets and more content.
  • Advanced monthly SEO: from around R15,000 and well above, for large or highly competitive campaigns.
  • Once-off SEO audits: commonly R3,000 to R12,000, depending on the size of the site.
  • Hourly consulting: often R550 to R2,500 an hour.

Always check whether a quote includes VAT, which is 15% in South Africa.

What changes the price

  • Your competition. Ranking for a rare service in a small town is far cheaper than for a crowded national term.
  • The size of your site and how much needs fixing.
  • How much content is included: guides, service pages, product descriptions.
  • Local versus national goals. Local SEO is usually simpler and cheaper than ranking nationally.
  • Who does the work, from a freelancer to a specialist agency.

What to look for in a quote

  • A written scope: what is done each month, in plain language.
  • Reporting you can understand: traffic, enquiries and rankings, not only a list of tasks.
  • Access to your own accounts, such as Google Analytics and your Google Business Profile.
  • Sensible contract terms, without a long lock-in for work that has not yet proved itself.

Red flags

  • A guaranteed number one ranking. Google decides, and no one can promise it.
  • "Secret methods" that are never explained.
  • No reporting, or reports that are only screenshots of activity.
  • Buying lots of low-quality links, which can harm you.

For most businesses that customers search for, yes. SEO builds visibility that keeps working, though it takes a few months to show results, so it suits businesses planning ahead.

How can I tell if an SEO company is legitimate?

Look for a clear written scope, honest reporting, access to your own accounts, and no guarantee of a number one ranking. Be cautious of secret methods and long lock-in contracts.
