How to rank a Wix website on Google in South Africa

Wix sites can rank, but not by themselves. Here is what ranking takes, in the order it matters, and what to expect from whoever builds yours.

A Wix website can rank on Google, but not on its own. The platform is rarely what holds a site back; thin pages, default settings and missing local signals are. This is what ranking takes, in the order it matters, and what you should expect from whoever builds your site.

Can a Wix website rank on Google?

Yes. Google does not rank sites by the platform they are built on. Wix gives a builder control of the things search engines read: page titles, descriptions, headings, image text, page addresses, redirects and structured data. What decides the result is how those are used, and that is where experience counts: knowing what to change, in what order, and what to leave alone. Our Wix vs WordPress guide compares the two platforms on search in more detail.

What every page needs

  • A unique page title. Not "Home" or "Services". It says what the page is and where you work, for example "Plumber in Centurion | Business name", in roughly 60 characters so it is not cut off in results.
  • A meta description that reads like a short pitch to someone scanning the results, at around 155 characters.
  • One clear heading at the top of the page (the H1), with the rest of the page broken up by sub-headings.
  • A short, readable page address, such as /pricing, chosen before launch. If an address ever changes, a redirect is set up so the old one does not break.
  • Image text (alt text) that describes each photo in plain words, and photos compressed before they are uploaded.

Search Console, set up and watched

Search Console is free. It shows which searches bring people to your site, which pages Google has found and any problems it hit. A good builder verifies your domain, submits your sitemap and checks it regularly through the first months. A standard Wix site creates its sitemap automatically at the end of your address, for example yourdomain.co.za/sitemap.xml. The work is making sure Google reads it, and that what it finds is worth ranking.

Pages written for the searches people actually make

Each service gets its own page, and each page is about one thing. A page that tries to cover everything ranks for nothing. The words are the ones your customers use, including where you work, used naturally: "wedding photographer in Cape Town" reads well, the same phrase repeated ten times does not. A short FAQ on the page, answering real questions, helps visitors and search engines alike. Our local SEO guide shows how the terms are chosen.

Local signals

For a business that serves a town or region, a complete Google Business Profile does more than almost any other single step. Your business name, address and phone number should be identical on your website, your profile and any directory listing, and happy customers should be asked for reviews. The profile links to your website, and the website links back to the profile.

Fast on a phone

Most South African visitors arrive on a phone, often on a mobile connection. Photos are compressed, heavy video is kept out of the top of a page, and animations are not stacked. Pages are tested on a phone and run through Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool, and the biggest items it lists are fixed first.

Mistakes that hold Wix sites back

  • Default page titles and descriptions left in place.
  • Important words placed inside images, where search engines cannot read them.
  • Page addresses changed without a redirect.
  • Thin pages with a sentence or two of text.
  • The site never verified in Search Console, so problems go unseen.
  • Expecting results in a week. Meaningful movement usually takes a few months.

What to ask whoever builds your site

  • Who writes the page titles and descriptions, and are they unique for every page?
  • Will Search Console and Google Analytics be set up and connected?
  • If I am moving from another site, how will you protect the rankings I already have?
  • How will you check speed on a phone?
  • What SEO work continues after launch, and what does it cost?

Where GDS fits

Every GDS website includes SEO, basic in Foundation and advanced in Structure, with Google Analytics set up. If you already have a Wix site, an SEO audit from R1,500 shows what to fix first, and monthly SEO starts at R2,000. Is Wix good for SEO?

Yes. Wix gives a builder control of page titles, descriptions, headings, image text, page addresses, redirects and structured data. Rankings then depend on content quality, site structure and authority rather than the platform.

How long does it take for a Wix website to rank on Google?

Meaningful movement usually takes a few months. Google needs time to crawl new pages, and local rankings also depend on reviews and consistent business details.

Who should set up SEO on a Wix website?

Whoever builds it. Page titles, descriptions, structure and Search Console belong in the build, not as an afterthought. Experience shows in getting them right the first time, and ongoing SEO then adds content and local signals over the months that follow.

Does Wix create a sitemap?

A standard Wix site generates one automatically, usually at the end of your address as /sitemap.xml. It should be submitted in Google Search Console so Google finds your pages.
